My classes at the UNC Wellness Center in Meadowmont:

Power Yoga, Tuesday, 10:15 a.m. (45 minutes)
Yoga for Athletes, Wednesday, 6 p.m. (one hour)

Ticket to Ride Cycle (get a ticket at the front desk), Tuesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. (one hour)

About half the students in Tuesday’s Power Yoga also ride with me in the cycling class. The two classes fit together for a two-hour workout, but they can also stand alone. My yoga classes in any given week use the same theme and sequence, which changes progressively week to week. This helps me keep my class fresh, interesting, and consistent.

I’ve led the cycling class for over three years. It’s taken a while, but I have convinced my students of the benefits of periodization. Instead of going hard every session—or even every week—we build our efforts toward a peak twice a year. This benefits not only the competitive athletes and charity riders in the class, but also the fitness-oriented gymgoers who don’t ride outside. Many of them have bought road bikes after building fitness in class!

The Wellness Center has a very active multisport community. Most of the local professional and elite amateur triathletes train there, and we have a large and active multisport club, Team UNC Wellness, which I sponsor. Many of the trainers are USA Triathlon–certified expert coaches, as I am. You can drop in to the center by buying a day pass at the front desk for $10. Bring a photo ID.
